Pete Smith replied to Toby Burton's discussion 'Bands are fun to play in; playing acoustically and solo can be lonely and scary. So, why do it to yourself?' in the group Acoustic Acts and Performers (London)
Playing with even one other musician is a nightmare for me, because I like to improvise. I extend notes, throw in an unscheduled couple of bars in 3/4, I do all kinds of stuff that you can only get away with as a solo performer. Chuck in the fact…

I fear that is your loss Timothy, not theirs. I for one am very glad that the yoof of today is out there making music, and I think a lot of it is great. Listening to new sounds from kids who are nearly young enough to be my grandchildren keeps my…

Pete Smith replied to Jimmy Hargreaves's discussion 'I want a new electro-acoustic guitar - any recommendations?'
I'm very pleased with my Simon & Patrick, cost just under £400. Sounds good acoustically, is very well made and plays nicely without a setup. Made in the Godin factory in Quebec, the nearest you'll get to a hand-made guitar at…

If it's this... http://direct.asda.com/Rock-N-Roll-Guitar/000755154,default,pd.html ... then I think not. OK, so it may make a few guitar-like noises, but I can't see how it could produce real music.

You can buy a guitar in Asda for £7? Really? Wow... yet another reason to grumble about how the yoof of today doesn't know when it's well off

Is technology to blame? The ritual of vinyl had its benefits, but man, the inconvenience of having to get up halfway through the album to turn it over. And they were so fragile! CDs are so convenient and forgiving of the occasional fingerprint or…

2 octaves? Wow, I don't think I can manage one LOL Is prolly why most of my work remains instrumental, no point in writing lyrics to a toon I can't sing.

Much the same when working face to face, but with less aggro. I can imagine being less than impressed when your collaborator dude(ette) waltzes in and plays his/her new evolved version of your masterpiece, and then refuses to budge on compromise. At…

Pete Smith replied to Kirsty Pollock's discussion 'Songwriting'
I'm guessing all songwriters use some kind of musical instrument in their work. I wonder what restrictions are placed on people's output by their choice of instrument and their ability to play it. For example, if you only know four guitar…

All this raises some interesting questions: (a) What are the pros and cons of collaborating? I can see benefits such as bouncing ideas around, specialised skills (lyrics v melody). The downside would include arguing ("Oh no it…

If you're still looking for someone to collaborate with, I live in Bromley and I seem to have very similar musical tastes to yours... blues, jazz, alt country, all tick my boxes. I'm a guitarist... yeah, I know, not many of us about :)

OK, I have to ask... anyone in the London area need a songwriting collaborator? I tend to be a tunes person rather than words, but I can turn out a reasonably well-crafted lyric if inspiration strikes. Don't all respond at once LOL

It varies... sometimes a line or two of lyric pops up, sometimes a chord progression, sometimes a melody... I file away the fragments and let them stew for a while. The thing about songwriting is, you have to have something to write about. By that I…

Folk, blues, jazz, country, indie, any of the above. I love to improvise, I am a sheet music free zone, you hum it I'll play it!
