A nice ending to this conversation Martin. Many of the comments on here have seem to digress into comparisons. The initial point i was making was that mainstream music today appears to be another string to a bow of marketing a 'brand'. The…

I’d love to think I was the last contributor to this discussion because I want to make us all feel better.  I’ve just celebrated my 52nd birthday and as I look and listen around me everything is good as I’m playing more than…

I agree. Check out my reply above. Theres loads of good music out there, you just have to dig around a little, but its always been like that. Timothy is right in as much as kids reliance on computers. We all had the N.M.E. or late night radio…

I fear that is your loss Timothy, not theirs. I for one am very glad that the yoof of today is out there making music, and I think a lot of it is great. Listening to new sounds from kids who are nearly young enough to be my grandchildren keeps my…

Younger Generation ... Fuck 'em if they don't have the the marbles to concentrate for more than a millisecond ... their loss ... tossers!   Anyhoo, there are a lot more attention grabbers for them these days than there were for us,…

As someone once wrote "if music be the food of love, then play on", perhaps adapted a little later to "party on dudes".  Whatever.  The thing is just enjoy playing and enjoy listening.  There is no one style of…

Enough already! In a nutshell..... Some aspects of the music industry are better today, some aren't. Some aspects were better in our day and some weren't. Now can we change the fuckin' record....or should that be CD.....or MP3.....or…

I have to agree. Its all about perception. Every generation perceives itself as being on the cutting edge. And the previous grumbles 'rubbish"!       Having said that, when I'm flipping through the…

There is apparently bands consisting of guitar hero instruments to be expected I suppose. Possibly not a bad thing in itself if it isnt used as a marketing ploy. We're digressing slightly away from the original subject of this discussion.…

With a lot of help from multiple effects pedals. Although I have to say that its noises are not remotely guitarlike imnsho. Okay, it's a completely different instrument that only LOOKS like a guitar, but it provides a variable signal that can…

If it's this... http://direct.asda.com/Rock-N-Roll-Guitar/000755154,default,pd.html ... then I think not. OK, so it may make a few guitar-like noises, but I can't see how it could produce real music.

It's a plastic toy designed for three year olds, but it is possible to play rudimentary tunes on it (even though it has no strings)... but with the pedals and a mic, suddenly it might just be a viable instrument anyway.

On the "Guitar Hero" type games point - it does seem to get a lot of people thinking about playing an actual instrument in a band - whereupon they will find it both harder and more rewarding! The singers will have a really hard time…

You can buy a guitar in Asda for £7? Really? Wow... yet another reason to grumble about how the yoof of today doesn't know when it's well off

On the other hand, that footpedal makes a toy guitar you can buy for 7 quid from Asda into a viable instrument.

Is technology to blame? The ritual of vinyl had its benefits, but man, the inconvenience of having to get up halfway through the album to turn it over. And they were so fragile! CDs are so convenient and forgiving of the occasional fingerprint or…

i've been playing for a while now and have only ever wanted to play music for a living but things never work out like we plan. I play with a ska band but not often enough. I just wanna get out there and do more stuff. Im faily open to most styles of music. I prefer to play rock / funky stuff and enjoy doing covers too. I know many musicians dont like to do covers but I have learned things I never would have thought about by doing other peoples songs. Im a pretty versatile player but I dont do that Satriani wibbley bibbley stuff. I have a lot of gigging experience and really I just wanna get out there and, if theres some pocket money in it thats even better.
What do you do for a living?
