Try some of the guitars from Washburn. They play really great, nice slim necks but make sure the tone is to your taste.
They can be quite loud and resonant when unplugged.

Indeed! And what about that bass player in Living Colour who has a multitude of bass effect pedals at his command that he has to concentrate on.
Les Claypool plays bass as if he were a possessed six stringer.
