Is it time to retire the Blues?

An old friend was trying to convince me that English musicians were the finest comtemporary proponents of the blues in the world today...my response...just because it's 12 bar...doesn't make it the blues...I believe the blues is something that comes from genuine suffering...a collective suffering...it comes from people deprived of access to the privileges of the mainstream...it is best reflected in crude instruments and untrained voices...just because someone sounds black...doesn't mean the…See More

Gray Dourman replied to Toby Burton's discussion 'What is your definition of "making it" in the music industry? (Started by Itsuka on the Fansite)'
Making It.... When I first heard my lyrics come out of a truly gifted and talented singer and watched an audience transfixed...I thought I had made it...didn't last long...that's the nature of 'making it'...it doesn't…

THE STRUGGLE BETWEEN CONVENTION AND INNOVATION

Here it is. The project brief is come up with something that sounds different, fresh, innovative but don't make it so radical that folks can't peg it into their already listening. OK. Take chord subsitution, add world music rythyms, change the vocalisations and harmonies...and voila! a mess. I could be trimming the hedge but somewhere, somehow, once more before I cash in my chips, I'm going to get that review that says...'takes music one step further'.Arrrghhh!Gray Dourmanwww.magichelix.comSee More

Partysounds is a good lead thanks. But in my experience you can hire all the pros you want, but until you find one that has either had all the stuffing knocked out of him or one that really understands what you're looking for, it's like…

The OX Remembered

Posted on June 26, 2009 at 10:14am 0 Comments

Jon 'The OX' Entwhistle changed the way the bass was played and in doing so changed rock music forever. You can hear when Keith Moon died the way the Ox had to drop back and play the bottom.
