Alcuin Edwards's Discussions/Articles

How do I get the Press to go to gigs?

Lately I've found myself in the position of being in a band that's actually incredibly good.  It's something of a surprise and not particularly down to me but the problem is, audiences seem to come…Continue

Alcuin Edwards replied to Toby Burton's discussion 'Bands are fun to play in; playing acoustically and solo can be lonely and scary. So, why do it to yourself?' in the group Acoustic Acts and Performers (London)
For me playing with bands is scary because I keep wondering when they'll notice that I'm not playing in key, keeping time or on some occasions playing in any recognisable key at all.  This doesn't apply when I'm singing so…

Thanks, Alcuin. I'm a big fan, too. Here are the venue's contact details: 207 Upper Street London N1 1RL 0207 354 1312 Its main promoter is Bugbear, who are very nice people, and can be found via their website:…

I love this venue.  It's everything a venue should be for punk bands.  The venue is tiny so I'm glad they've chosen to stop serving drinks in the basement.  There is a perfectly good bar upstairs and the performance downstairs is shown on a screen. In the venue itself, there was a really nice sound engineer on the day we played.  He GOT us, which was nice, and was able to mic up my dulcitar so you can actually hear it on the video (which was even better).  The club seemed full with less than…See More

I've seen adverts for band members from two members of Vaccination now so I can confirm the implosion.  That adds a degree of desperation I'm afraid.

And not only do you have to know your songs and lyrics perfectly, you have to have the nerve to keep going when, as is inevitable, you mess up.

That's true of the Dublin Castle and I have no idea about the Grosvenor as I've never played there but it's definitely not true of the Water Rats, at least on a Saturday, because there's not enough seating in the pub anyway and…

We played Nambucca on a Monday to an audience so small that when they clapped, we could thank them individually by name.  The venue is impressive, in the back room of a pub and if I had more skills as a publicist, I'd probably hire it…

I'm 51 years old and looking for a new band, preferably acoustic but I'd quite like to do original material, not least because I'm a great lyricist.  I've just left one band (at least I think I have, the band seems to have…

We (Vaccination) played the Comedy last Christmas and I have to say, it's a lovely little venue and both the promoter and the sound engineer were very helpful.  Sadly, we could only provide an audience of five (although there were a good…

Arrgh - Banjo player, fiddler and accordionist wanted!

I think Vaccination may have imploded. We were due to play at the Water Rats again but after a furious exchange of emails in the morning which began with a simple request for a set list and ended with the bass player insisting on playing minimalist improvisational rock and/or roll while the other singer wanted to play songs we knew which would stop the audience getting bored... then the main guitarist (and the bloke who does the beats) chimed in with, "well I'm not playing unless both of you…See More

My Ideal Band

Posted on August 7, 2010 at 8:32pm 1 Comment

I dragged my wife along to the social last week and met some of the people who make this site work so well. It's no secret that I'm frustrated by my current situation musically, being in three bands that between them meet some of my needs but none of which is really "the one". Toby asked me what would be my ideal band and I kind of sidestepped the question by suggesting that what I wanted was not a particular style but that I had some records I wanted to cover ranging from Robert Johnson's "Me… Continue

Getting Back Into the Swing of Things

Posted on October 25, 2009 at 10:33am 0 Comments

I had retired.

Suddenly, at the beginning of 2009, somebody organised a gig and asked if I wanted to sing. Suddenly, after singing Robert Johnson's "Me and the Devil Blues" for an audience of 200 in a Government building in South London somewhere, I found myself back.

Other gigs followed, including bizarrely a gig at the Royal Festival Hall, where I sang Tom Waits' "God's Away on Business" acapella and solo.

Soon, I found myself fronting the band that had backed… Continue
