The Rowbarge is a very friendly, small pub by the river Wey, away from the town centre.  It has had a bit of a reputation in the past, but the current landlord has been there for a couple of years, and the reputation is definitely the past.  Fur us musicians, this is a music pub.  There is a jam night every Wednesday - turn up as an individual or band and get a slot for three songs. They also do gigs there - bookings taken for 2011 now (and advance notice - the Greedies is booked for Friday 28th January!)

Nice little stage, the pub has its own backline and PA if needed.  A six piece band was on stage tonight, so there is space for anything!

hi guys ,i got a call from a local prom a few years back ,he couldnt get a band to play a bikers gig at the rowbarge in guildford as it was supposed to be a hard venue .i could only put together a duo with only having a couple of hours notice but no worries it was a good rocking crowd and to be honest i have found all bikers bashes to be good rocking crowds and the dough is allways right.i didnt find the rowbarge to be rough back then, but i will check it out soon to see if the beer is up to local standards.
definitely not a bikers pub now. ok one ot two leather jackets around but the car park was full of cars!

watch out for the random saxophone and trumpet players who join in on the jam night!
sounds good to me paul .i dont realy do jam nights although i did do some blues down the lion brewery a while ago but its not realy my bag,but i will come and have a nite down the rowbarge jam nite just to taste the beer and see who is around.
there was some blues, but we don't do blues. The jamming is whatever goes - this time we did Bohemian, Tush (ok I guess this is sort of a blues structure) and Kick out the Jams. and others did Whole Lotta Love and Rock 'n' Roll. Then inevitably Freebird.
lot of us old folks stuck in that sort of rut.same as most so called jam nights,i do like some blues but prefer more contemporary live music.last project was a amy lavere trib which i realy enjoyed ,you can only take so much freebird and sweet home alabama its as worn out as mustang sally, theres plenty of good bands around doing some great music right now. i like to hear a varied set but it seems most bands are playing the same old varied set as every other band, although i dont write my own music or songs i have allways admired bands that do,i wouldnt go to see a band knowing they were going to play freebird wishing well etc but i would listen to it while i was there ,not saying theres better music out there. but i prefer not so well worn, and i think a majority of punters feel the same.
Totally agree. If I have to hear All Right Now one more time I can't be responsible for my actions and the drummers sticks may go somewhere they were not designed to go ! And every time my band play Mustang Sally (only by request at parties) I feel ill - really I do - like I'm about to pass out and a strange paralysis comes over my fingers as I try to hit the strings. Life is too short. There is SO much good music out there - from every era but also a lot of fresher more recent stuff, that I can only ask Why ? Our lead gutarist - only in his 20s - is the worst - won;t touch anything recent and never happier than when steeped in 70's rock..
Trisha,

I love old classics - but yeah, you do get tired of them. Went to The Unicorn in Aldershot on Monday night - NOT a blues jam, pretty much whatever you can come up with. Had a young band doing some of their own stuff up first, then Steven + Ann + some others doing a bit of Stereophonics and Kings of Leon. Pretty good night - temporarily lacking in guitarists (apparently not usual) though there were 6 bassists present!

OK, so, I have been wanting to 'update' my general listening for ages but I don't know the easiest way to get a decent supply of good modern ROCK music. Any radio/web station playlist etc suggestions?
the nurses have Absolute Radio playing on the wards most of the time and its non-stop great numbers, old and new - google it to find out.. not sure what the geriatric patients think. I think you need DAB or internet for it. ALso try Q radio or website.
I'm off to an open mike night on Monday at Bagster House - somewhere near Weybridge - sounds similar as they want to focus more on rock than Blues., Hope there aren;t too many Bassists there !
The Unicorn ?? hmmmm I grew up in Aldershot, vaguely remember the Unicorn. Let me know if you go again.. although painful memories may be too much (have mostly avoided the town since both my parents died there).
I'd better move down the dial from planet rock...
:-) good old Planet Rock. Or "Rick Wakeman's mates Retirement Fund".

Good tip on Absolute Radio, Trisha - I will check it out. I'll also let you know if we go up the Unicorn again. Maybe if there are too many bassists there could be a experimental mega-multiple-bass blowout :-) Bound to have been done in the 70's?
