D'y'know, that even at my age (51), I still help thinking that I haven't given my best yet, musically speaking. I know that I can play bass better than I could 25 years ago. So what happened? Well, I don't think I tried hard enough to 'make it' as a pro-musician. Oh sure! We did the 'demo-gig-record company' thing but it wasn't enough, or we took the wrong turns.

These days, the internet, and computer recording has opened so many more doors to young bands. Gone are the days when you had to drive 60-70 miles (if you didn't live in a city) to the nearest studio to spend 14 hours recording a 3 track demo of shonky quality. Now it can be recorded at home, and released as an album without setting foot outside your front door!

But despite all these tecnical advances, I think the old way was a good 'character building exercise'. And gave you the experiances that can't be got anymore. And as a result, makes you a more rounded person/musician.

Spending hours locked in a real shitty studio, or couped up in a rent-a-van with a bunch of smelly arsed musos, can definitely build character! But it can also bond a band closer than any drinking session. Taking the rough with the smooth, was all part of growing as a person and a musician. And it gave you a real 'us against the world' gang mentality.

Do I still want to be a rock star? OH YEAH!!!

COULD I be a rock star?  Not for me to say!

hey Phil, Guess what...?  I just turned 64 ( will they still need me, will they still feed me..when I'm sixty..four )

remember that song ?

Well,  I am in a band, joined about 1 year ago after a 5 year break...I think I'm better than ever ( I started when I was 16 ).

I was stunned the other day, when I gave one of my home recorded CDs to a Record A&R guy and he replied a few days later saying, "hey ..love your songs" when can we get together.

Then at the same meeting a "Cool Chick" ..Sally King...came over and grabbed me by the arm and said "don't go anywhere, I want to talk to you" and without hearing any of my songs said, "how would you like to try out for my band !!!.

So you see Phil,  it's never too late...EVER !

The following week, and this is getting crazy and unbelievable but true...I met a chick Film producer, gave her a copy of that same CD and she rang me back two days later and said "Hey..do you want to be a STAR"...I said "who me...nah"

She said,."redo these two tracks from your CD and we will start filming for a Video Clip for TV asap !...Holy ShiT !!!

What more can I say....never say never...that's what I live by....all the best Phil.

Hear hear... to both of you.

Very inspirational!

The music industry is being redefined and with an ageing population it makes sense for older musicians to break the mould and challenge the mainstream.

@Graham make sure you post links to the videos

Helluva story Graham.....good luck with that. But don't forget. Even though the music industry has changed almost beyond recognition, there are still people who climb over their dead mother to stiff you! Keep you wits about you, and enjoy the ride!!!
