An old friend was trying to convince me that English musicians were the finest comtemporary proponents of the blues in the world today...my response...just because it's 12 bar...doesn't make it the blues...I believe the blues is something that comes from genuine suffering...a collective suffering...it comes from people deprived of access to the privileges of the mainstream...it is best reflected in crude instruments and untrained voices...just because someone sounds black...doesn't mean the delivery feels black...just because Bonnie Raitt can moan...doesn't mean she knows what she's moaning about...if we're goin' to borrow blues structures and scales...let's make sure that we extend the envelope of the genre...as even Clapton says...to little structure leads to self indulgence...

Hi Gray, as i've mentioned in one of my blogs entitled 'I ain't got the blues', I ain't got the blues. I got into music through punk and new wave and while I enjoy bands that apply the blues to their music, they are mostly white boys/men pushing the blues/rock envelope, like The Doors or Led Zeppelin.

I think there's a place for the blues. And those who are still truely passionate about it seem to have a decent circuit and its support. The blues, i'm sure, goes down well at some local festivals, and these bands do well at these. But my mission has always been to promote older musicians that make original music other than more traditional forms such as the blues, jazz and country, because I don't think they have much support or get enough promotion.

I could go on....I will, when i get more time.

Thanks, Toby
