Lately I've found myself in the position of being in a band that's actually incredibly good. It's something of a surprise and not particularly down to me but the problem is, audiences seem to come these days by social networking and, unless the people who "matter" hear you, then you might as well be rubbish.
Now, we want to get out of the "bring your own audience" venus and into those that have regulars and put on bands that are damn good rather than those who have lots of friends. We'd also like people to buy our single and when it's out our album. Trouble is, the audience we're sure is out there needs to hear from some of the people they trust to "know" that we're a damn fine band but they don't, as far as I can tell, come to those venues that just put on bands with lost of friends.
So... does anybody know how to get the press to come along and listen?

As far as the 'better' venues go - I'd say just try them. Ideally you have some sort of YouTube vid or decent live recording of yourselves (if not, get some! You can get OK stuff with a sound recorder that costs about £100(ish ) ).
Press? Dunno there. Try the free local papers - write a short article with a wee bit about the band, your website address (where people can find vids/mp3s of the band in action) and the date/time/price of your next gig and send it with a good quality band photo. Our local paper runs 1 or 2 a week and it does always sound like the band write them themselves to me. It's space filled with no work done by the paper's staff so it's a nice appeal to basic human laziness. Otherwise I'd say find out the name of the music journo on whatever publication you fancy being in and contact them with your copy/ gig details.
Local radio too - try to get on the gig listings - e.g.for Eagle Radio in Surrey you go via their website.
Oh yeah there are tons of gig/event listings websites - get on as many as you can find.

Yeah. Sadly we don't have a local paper because we don't have one area where we live...
I'm thinking of doing a reading from Colonel Gaddaffi at my next gig and then complaining anonymously to the Daily Mail.
