Back in 2008 I posted a blog about how I felt mature musicians could think and care more about how they present themselves on stage and in photos. And how they should dress in an age appropriate fashion. You can read it here: http://www.rock-til-you-drop-blog.com/2008/11/this-is-no-time-to-be...

RTYD member Trisha McNair (Riff Raff, Surrey) added this a year later (scroll down the page to see it here: http://www.r-t-y-d.com/2009/11/strutting-your-stuff-by-trisha-mcnai...)

Today, I was reminded of these two blog-posts by this article in the Guardian today by Simon Mills about Take That's new 'mature' image: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/dec/21/take-that-style-... (and below)

Should we care about how we look on stage and in photos? Do you? Or have you given up caring? Does your band have an image? Is image important to you? At 40-plus, what can we get away with wearing? For instance, are we too old to wear leather, or drainpipe jeans, and T-shirts with slogans?

What do you reckon about how we mature musicians should present ourselves?

Take That: style icons for older men by Simon Mills Tuesday 21 December 2010 21.00 GMT guardian.co.uk © Guardian News and Media Limited 2010

The mature Take That have reinvented their sound – and given their wardrobe a serious overhaul. They're now the perfect fashion role models for men over 40

I do care how I look on stage.  I may wear t-shirts with slogans but I'm more likely to wear a western style shirt with a panama hat and some comfy jeans.  I'm not too OLD to wear drainpipes, I'm too fat to wear 'em.

I think the main difference is, at fifty, I can't get away with an image that suggests sexy young buck but there are other rock 'n' roll images available - tired old dirt farmer is one I've found effective.

'Tired old dirt farmer' I like that! Thanks, Alcuin

Yeah I care. You might have guessed if you have seen some of the Greedies shots/vids. Sadly, my Christmas outfit went undocumented - the gig was cancelled due to snow so the only time it got an outing was at a jam on Tuesday. Boots. I am big into boots.

Tight trousers? oh yes still do them. Though I'll need to get back on my bicycle after all the  Xmas scoffing (if it ever stops snowing!)

As the saying goes, the first impression is a lasting imposition, so why spend lots of money buying all the gear, paying the rehearsal studio, only to look like a bunch of lost teenagers with dilutions of grandeur as you step into the spot light, we have all don it, haven't we.
I think if you don't bother, then you can’t expect Joe Public to bother with a return visit to your next gig, The moral, if there is one, treat each gig as a job interview, do your home work, comb your hair, straiten your tie, if your warring one, think of your audience, Iggy Pop does

I always try to ensure that my underpants are clearly visible above my trouser waist band.
I always try to look like Iggy on stage, though it's not quite the same with moobs.
Here at Poundshop Life we think that a mature approach is needed to dress code - just like Lady Gaga
Believe it or not, Creak do actually discuss what we might wear on stage. Ok, I'd admit that we might not ever get to an agreement...
I'm right out that door Hiram !

loads of good points there but I'm still not quite sure about Take That's look in the top photo - too brown and tweedy for me but maybe that's the lighting ?

Anyway, if you're still not clear, try taking a look at Q's Award winners at  http://gallery.qthemusic.com/gallery/theawards2010winnersandpresent...  and others in the gallery there.

and its not just what you wear - older musicians tend to curl inwards and stand rigid just playing their instruments - tedious to watch. The audience want to feel that the band is actually engaging with them - we can't all be raging extroverts but if you don't have a great front man then you have to at least smile (or snarl ?) and say something occasionally to the people who have come to see you.

Agreed, it's all an act after all, and if your up on stage you may as well make the most of it.

I think presentation and image is very important no matter how old you are.  A lot of bands just give up as they get older and become lethargic in this regard.  I do understand that it becomes harder when you have a day job and responsibilities but I always try to make the effort.
