The little ad on the sidebar about 4 notes reminded me of a band I worked with in the 70s who made a lot of money out of six notes...C Eb FF#G Bb. They played for hours, one song I remember lasted two and half hours and two of the members were never seen again. While its the feeling not the complexity of the arrangement which distinguishes the ability of the musician to communicate, because communicate they did, they virtuosity of the musician is never challenged, the fingers do the thinking, they know where to go, they've been there before.

Sure 4 chords or even 6 are enough.
Pink Floyd can play for an hour and only cycle through the chords twice at most.
Chords Dave, yes, actually three are enough...but we're talking notes here...plonk, plonk, plonk, plonk and you've had your lot...doesn't seem quite enough to me, even after you've added the octaves, but then if you really plonk, I guess you could say you're a real plonker.

I have just been informed that the opening to Beethoven's fifth and the intro to 'Smoke on the Water' are both four notes. I cannot verify this but if true...well I concede that four notes are enough for an intro...
