I feel sorry for youngsters in the music biz today.

After reading tons of stuff about a female singer called Polly Scattergood (she's dark! her album is fantastic! she's the next big thing!) i went to see her perform at Rough trade records.

OMG. It was awful. Awful vocals. Songs that went on too long...I cannot understand why she's been so hyped up...I mean, Laura Marling has a fantastic voice and interesting lyrics...and she's only a kid...and Polly has been hyped up to being something similar.
It was so bad.
Maybe she was having an off day.
Or maybe she just isn't very good.
But why oh why does she have an album deal and why are music critics so in love with her?

I think it's a terrible thing to do this to a young kid...she simply can't live up to the hype.
Time Out then went and wrote a big article about her...
which made me LOL.

This is second rate music for a generation that's happy to dub Pete Doherty as a 'genius'.

Oh dear!

I agree! It's high time everyone stops falling for this tripe and start worshipping at the feet of Lady Gaga!
Hype is a powerful tool but when push comes to shove you have to be able to do the biz, its a shame so many can't live up to the hype, also when you play live you're dependent on the sound if the sound isnt good youre not, I'm always nervous if I dont know the sound guy.
Nah - just rush in like a bull in a chinashop. Sort the sound on the fly. If you're any good live peole will know. You can fix sound but you cannot fix a lack of talent. Delores makes some pretty nifty points too.
L.O.L. she's good fun...but hardly original?!

Oh cheers for that, Colin.

Have other people got examples of new artists they believe are vastly overrated and hyped?

I must say that every American female singer songwriter i hear these days sounds just like the great Suzanne Vega!

It also irritates me when music mags start blathering on about how the latest female singer is the successor to Joni Mitchell. No they're not. She was an original...and totally unique.

Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

It's good to rant.

Beth Rawlings - seen her twice live now supporting other acts... and... sorry just don't get it, she's a poor man's Amy Winehouse or something, whatever I cannot understand how she charts her album and Phil Campbell who in my opinion blew her off stage as opening support act to David Gray didn't.
